Flank wear, cratering, built-up edge, chipping and thermal cracking each point to a different root cause, and the fix depends on your machine, your fixture, your batch and your coolant. The better the inputs, the sharper the fix.

  • Wear photo of the failed edge, in focus
  • Workpiece material and condition (e.g. 42CrMo4, 28 HRC)
  • Operation and feature (turning, milling, drilling, threading)
  • Current tool, holder and grade / coating
  • Cutting data: Vc, fn, ap (and RPM if known)
  • Coolant type and delivery (flood, through-tool, dry)
  • Machine and stability notes (overhang, fixturing, interrupted cut)
  • The symptom and when it shows (e.g. "edge chips at 20 min")

No photo? Still send it.

A clear photo of the wear makes the diagnosis sharper, but it is not mandatory. If you only have the parameters and the symptom, send those and I will tell you whether a photo is needed before I start.

Tip: shoot the edge under raking light against a plain background. A phone macro is plenty.

Do we need a call?
